Gan Thiam Poh on Community Disputes Resolution (Amendment) Bill

05:21 Min

The community and Government agencies should keep a balanced approach in resolving disputes between neighbours, said MP Gan Thiam Poh. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 12), he stressed the need to encourage cooperation and tolerance. Mr Gan said it is “unfortunate” that a Bill has to be introduced to empower Government agencies with additional regulatory tools to resolve community disputes. He stressed the need to step up public education programmes and outreach to remind residents to be more considerate towards their neighbours. Mr Gan said there is still an important role for dedicated grassroots leaders and volunteers to mediate in community disputes. He also sought clarifications on the Bill. He wanted to know if agencies are ready to cope with issues stemming from mental health illnesses and what support is available for family members dealing with difficult mental health patients.
