Gan Thiam Poh on Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 3) Bill
It is easy for tiny nations like Singapore to be ignored in the international arena and we need to have a presence wherever possible, said MP Gan Thiam Poh in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22). This is why it may be beneficial for Singapore’s President and Government ministers to be appointed to foreign organisations to champion the country’s interests, but at the same time, he said, the concern is whether it will adversely affect their ability to fulfil their domestic responsibilities. Mr Gan asked if there will be a limit on the number and type of appointments ministers can take on in their private capacities and how the Cabinet will screen and approve invitations. He added that mechanisms must be in place to prevent any conflict of interest.
