Hany Soh on building an inclusive and safe digital society
Large organisations such as banks and e-commerce platforms should do more to prevent losses arising from online scams and bear the consequences, said MP Hany Soh. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 10), she said the approach ought to be “consumer protection-centric” and hit out at the position taken by the banks to “conveniently” expect customers to fend for themselves. She said it is the joint responsibility of all stakeholders to commit towards adopting a whole-of-nation approach to sustain trust by building an inclusive and safe digital society. Banks could and should do more, such as developing better anti-phishing solutions, improving authenticity verification and staying extra vigilant towards abnormal transactions to keep accounts secure and prevent the likelihood of scams.
