Hany Soh on Women's Charter (Family Violence and Other Matters) (Amendment) Bill
Under a proposed new regime to tackle family violence, “protectors” appointed by the Director General of Social Welfare can apply for Personal Protection Orders on behalf of victims who are unwilling to do so on their own. MP Hany Soh asked if they can also do this for victims who are willing but unable to apply due to factors such as being underage or mentally incapacitated. She also expressed concern about the workability of court orders such as Stay Away or No Contact imposed against accused perpetrators. Given that this may involve them moving out from home, she asked if they will receive help, just as victims are provided shelter. Finally, Ms Soh said there must be measures in place to ensure that the system is not abused by estranged parties in acrimonious marriages. She spoke in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4).
