Hazel Poa on growing Singapore’s hawker culture

14:41 Min

Allocate hawker stalls on a pre-determined rent structure instead of the highest rent tendered to keep rental costs under control. Another way is to let customers decide and vote for their preferred stalls in hawker centres near their flats. This can be done on a trial basis at a few hawker centres first, before extending it to all hawker centres. NCMP Hazel Poa floated these ideas in a motion in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 13), calling on the Government to review its policies to better support hawkers to sustain and grow Singapore’s hawker culture. Another way to lower costs for hawkers and keep hawker food affordable is to set up a centralised procurement system under a new agency proposed by her Progress Singapore Party. It can contract with wholesalers to supply ingredients commonly used by hawkers, such as cooking oil, rice, flour, sugar, salt and eggs, at lower prices through bulk purchasing. Ms Poa said such a system would have a very substantial impact on reducing costs and ensure that being a hawker remains a viable and sustainable livelihood.
