Jamus Lim on Building a Healthier SG

21:01 Min

Focusing solely on preventative care is an "incomplete solution" to limiting the demand for healthcare, whose persistence has been driving prices up, says MP Jamus Lim. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5), he said the solution must go beyond the Healthier SG initiatives, as laudable as they are, with healthcare costs escalating rapidly. He said Singapore should include greater cross-referencing of prices to benchmarks that are limited in range and allow insurers to pay out within this narrower range. The Government should play a coordinating role in managing such coverage. It should also be more proactive in bargaining for lower prices for procedures covered under MediShield Life, while also auditing excessive discrepancies in fees between the public and private sectors. Price increases in other areas, such as real estate, should be managed as this can spill over into healthcare costs, he added.
