Janet Ang on Retirement and Re-employment (Amendment) Bill and Central Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill

Legislation will help to ensure consistent fair treatment and deter abuse of senior workers by all employers, said NMP Janet Ang. Equally, if not more important than legislation, are the structural changes needed at the workplace to support and better prepare mature workers for retirement, she said in Parliament on Monday (Nov 1). There is also a need for a mindset change. She suggested a "shoulder season" to help workers prepare early for retirement and continue to contribute to the country. She urged companies to start gentle "off-ramp" programmes spread over five years for employees between 55 and 65, maybe even 70 years old. They should ringfence the age demographic, define the benefits and build a whole new economy with ancillary services and retraining opportunities. "Make it a stage of life that people look forward to," she said.
