Janil Puthucheary on addressing challenges in meeting recycling targets

14:01 Min

Singapore has set a target of 70 per cent recycling rate and aims to reduce the waste-to-landfill per capita per day by 30 per cent by 2030. While it is striving to achieve these targets, the government will review them for relevance, given the changing waste and recycling landscape. Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary said this in reply to MPs’ questions in parliament on Tuesday (Jul 7). For the targets to be meaningful, the government will address the challenges associated with recycling of both domestic and non-domestic waste, he said. It is studying how it can increase the yield of clean, segregated recyclables that are easier for recyclers to meet regulatory requirements, as well as engage waste generators to explore better ways to segregate waste upstream.
