Thousands of demonstrators have rallied outside the Japanese parliament in protest at government moves to revise a pacifist constitution, which has been in place since 1947. The Lower House had approved a bill that will ease procedures for amendments to the constitution. The government under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has made a concerted move to shift defence policy - including a revision of Article 9 in the Constitution, which renounces war and the use of force to settle disputes. The article also prohibits operating land, sea and air forces that could be used to wage war. Michiyo Ishida reports.
