K Shanmugam on Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
The maximum punishment for three sexual offences will be increased to signal the importance of building a society that embodies the fundamental values of equality and respect, said Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam. The first is for outrage of modesty, with the maximum jail term to be increased from two years to three years. The other two are for sexual offences against minors. The maximum imprisonment, which is currently at one year, will be increased to two years. This will bring the punishment in line with civil offences involving sexual communications with minors, said Mr Shanmugam in Parliament on Monday (Sep 13).
