K Shanmugam on disclosure of race-based prison inmate and crime statistics

10:59 Min

Race-based statistics on the prison inmate population and crime rate should continue to be shared in closed-door settings with community leaders and groups so that they can address the issues as a community. The Government will stick to its approach of disclosing such information on a selective basis, where doing so would be useful and positive for the community and society. Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam stressed the need for this approach in reply to an MP's question in Parliament on Monday (Jul 4). He said the Government has been careful about publicly releasing such data with the racial breakdown as it might deepen stereotypes and undermine efforts in building harmonious relations among all races.
