Lim Biow Chuan on Community Disputes Resolution (Amendment) Bill

10:49 Min

It is timely to review the effectiveness of the law, given that the number of complaints did not appear to have come down, said MP Lim Biow Chuan. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 12), he pointed out that he still sees issues revolving around noise, hoarding, encroachment of common space and smoking. He voiced support for the amendments to give the authorities more levers to resolve family disputes which have a negative impact on the community. He also supports the setting up of the Community Relations Unit (CRU) and urged the Government to put it to work as quickly as possible “because all of us have many cases” to refer to the CRU. On the assurance that the monitoring equipment for the noise sensors will not record every conversation in the household, he urged the Government to assure residents that their privacy is protected. Otherwise, they are unlikely to allow the noise sensors to be installed. Mr Lim also stressed the need to promote positive social behaviour and neighbourliness so that there would be fewer disputes, and disputes can be resolved far more easily.
