Lim Biow Chuan on Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill
While Conditional Fee Agreements (CFAs) will enhance access to justice, the laws against champerty and maintenance are still "very applicable", said MP Lim Biow Chuan. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 12), he cautioned that with the introduction of CFAs, lawyers could subvert court proceedings for monetary gain. He asked the Government to elaborate on its safeguards. He also asked if "unscrupulous" lawyers who target and coerce victims of road or industrial accidents to take up litigation would be able to circumvent existing laws by getting victims to sign CFAs.
