Louis Chua on Women's Charter (Family Violence and Other Matters) (Amendment) Bill

09:19 Min

Trauma often forces children to mature faster and beyond their years, said MP Louis Chua in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4). With a proposal that younger victims of family violence be allowed to apply for Personal Protection Orders - at 18, down from 21 - he asked what were the considerations behind this and whether there needs to be an age limit at all. Mr Chua also wanted to know what measures are in place to ensure that victims do not face financial strain when family violence orders such as domestic exclusion, Stay Away or No Contact orders are issued - for example, women and children who have no access to family finances. Overall, he said victims must not fear they will be worse off if they break their silence and step away from harm, and that adequate support should be available to them - be it financial and housing assistance or even help with immigration matters.
