Punitive sentences for adult offenders who commit hurt and sexual crimes send a strong signal to society, but measures must also be taken to ensure these offenders no longer pose a threat to public safety after they have served their time, said MP Louis Ng in Parliament on Monday (Sep 13). He asked what kinds of counselling and treatment they receive and whether these continue post-release. Mr Ng also wanted to know if guidelines on compensation for crime victims could be considered by a new sentencing advisory panel.
