Low Yen Ling on how Singapore is affected by COVID-19 lockdowns in China

04:49 Min

Singapore’s key imports from China include electronics, machinery and metals, which are mostly needed by companies in manufacturing and construction. Most of these firms have been able to cope with delays in shipments caused by curbs imposed by China to battle its surge in COVID-19 infections. Meanwhile, Singapore does not expect China’s lockdowns to significantly affect its supplies of essential food and healthcare items as its reliance on China for these is relatively low. Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling gave these updates in Parliament on Monday (May 9) in reply to an MP’s questions. She said that overall, China’s COVID-19 controls have further strained global supply chains which are already under stress from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and this will likely exacerbate global inflationary pressures. She outlined various measures taken to help businesses and households cope and said the Government will continue to monitor the situation closely.
