Mark Lee on building an inclusive and safe digital society

17:50 Min

As Singapore steadfastly progresses towards its vision of a Smart Nation, it is imperative that the digital transformation journey is not only marked by technological advancement but is characterised by inclusivity and safety, said NMP Mark Lee. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 10), he said this holistic approach is essential in ensuring that the benefits of digitisation are accessible and secure for all members of society. He also highlighted the importance of businesses as a pillar of Singapore's digital society. Many businesses are either adopting or developing digital products and services to better engage and serve the needs of customers, he said. In a manpower-tight situation, they are implementing digital solutions to streamline operations to improve efficiency. But there are considerable challenges to some companies, especially those with limited resources, said Mr Lee. Small- and medium-sized enterprises trail behind their larger counterparts and find digital safety and cyber defences “prohibitively expensive”, said Mr Lee. He urged the Government to consider tailored and accessible self-help tools, as well as collaborative resources to make it more affordable for companies to enhance cyber security.
