Mark Lee on Platform Workers Bill
The evolution of the platform economy means new types of services will inevitably emerge and legislation must be flexible enough to respond to future developments. NMP Mark Lee said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10) during the debate on the Platform Workers Bill. He also said requiring platform operators to provide work injury compensation insurance and ensure that platform workers receive safety training is essential, but he suggested that having a national mechanism to coordinate this across operators will ensure there is no unnecessary duplication and costs. Mr Lee noted that increased costs resulting from the Bill are likely to hit small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) more acutely as they often rely on platform services due to their limited ability to manage functions in-house. He asked if the Government will actively monitor SMEs to ensure their costs are managed, and whether it can work with businesses and trade associations to explore comprehensive support.
