Motion: Gerald Giam on suitability of Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition

04:54 Min

Mr Pritam Singh has been sentenced and paid his fines, and by seeking to remove his position as Leader of the Opposition (LO), the motion appears to be imposing a further political penalty on top of the legal one, said MP Gerald Giam. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 14), he stressed the need to remember that the position of LO remains a role constituted at the Prime Minister's prerogative. He pointed out that the Workers’ Party is vastly outnumbered in the House. The outcome may be a “foregone conclusion” but the moral weight of the decision rests on every Member, he said.
