Motion: Sylvia Lim on suitability of Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition

07:41 Min

Mr Pritam Singh’s case is unlike those of previous instances where MPs have misconducted themselves and resigned, said MP Sylvia Lim in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 14). This is because those MPs admitted wrongdoing, while Mr Singh has maintained his innocence, contested the charges and appealed against his conviction. Ms Lim said she believed the motion on his suitability as Leader of the Opposition “does not serve Singaporeans, but is a party political exercise”; and she foresees Singapore’s parliament slipping further down a global rule of law ranking on effectively checking government power. Ms Lim also asked if she and Faisal Manap will have the chance to address parliament before it decides whether to take steps against them.
