Murali Pillai on Registration of Criminals (Amendment) Bill
During the debate on a Bill aimed at enhancing police capabilities to solve crimes using DNA evidence, MP Murali Pillai brought up several clarifications in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12). He asked why an accused person will have to apply to have their DNA information deleted upon acquittal or discharge, noting that changing the default from automatic deletion to automatic retention appears to benefit those with the time, resources and know-how to put in a request. He also wanted to know if a written notice will be issued to an accused person warning them about the consequences of refusing to provide a DNA sample.
