Pride Over Prejudice
“Pride Over Prejudice” is a two-part documentary that uncovers the roots of prejudice between ethnic & immigrant communities in Singapore and explores how pride in multicultural identity, values & heroes can overcome differences.
The first episode “Pride in an Unnatural Nation” unpacks the hope and challenge of growing a Singaporean identity in a multicultural nation which inherited age-old ethnic prejudices from its colonial past as well as competing nationalisms from the motherlands of its immigrant citizenry.
The second episode “Prejudice in a Global City” investigates problems absorbing newer waves of immigrants into the social fabric of post-independence Singapore. In 2020, over 1 in 3 persons in Singapore wasn’t a citizen. Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic reveal underlying fear and discomfort among native-born Singaporeans about the many “strange, new faces” in their midst.
