Rachel Ong on Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill
While many well-meaning retailers or wholesalers would donate food items that are past their best-before dates but still in good condition, some may take the opportunity to dispose of poor-quality items. Food rescue organisations may not be able to thoroughly inspect every donated item, so it is crucial to clarify if the Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill protects these intermediaries and who would be held liable if unsafe food is distributed. MP Rachel Ong made this point in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 7). She also noted that some food rescue social enterprises ask for donations or nominal fees to support sustainability efforts. So it is important to determine if the Bill will cover these groups and establish requirements for their inclusion. Ms Ong also called for public education alongside implementation of the Bill. This will broaden acceptance of rescued food and should inform the public about various date labels such as the distinction between expiry, best-before and use-by dates. She also urged the Government to encourage businesses to reduce food waste through tax incentives and other support.
