Raj Joshua Thomas on Israel-Hamas conflict

07:43 Min

Singaporeans must make continuous effort to protect and bolster the country’s multiracial and multi-religious society, with the relevant parties taking the necessary measures, said NMP Raj Joshua Thomas. “I trust in Singapore's level-headedness and generosity and that our reaction will be to come together to collectively provide humanitarian support and prayer for the victims of war,” he said in Parliament on Monday (Nov 6). He voiced support for the motion for three reasons. Firstly, it reiterates Singapore's principled approach to such conflicts and its commitment to United Nations' processes and rule of international law as the underlying basis for international relations. Secondly, it acknowledges that there are victims on both sides of the conflict, and that both sides should ensure the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Thirdly, the motion calls on Singaporeans to uphold and protect their multiracial and multi-religious way of life. He said while community trust in Singapore is high, dialogue between the Government, religious leaders and Singaporeans of all communities is critical to keep the peace. He hopes Singaporeans will see the complexity of the situation in the Middle East as there are legitimate justifications, arguments and concerns for both sides. Armed conflicts invariably lead to tragedy as people lose their lives, loved ones and homes. He noted the ground-up measures to raise funds and provide aid for communities in Gaza, as well as the role of the religious communities to protect Singapore’s multiracial and multi-religious society.
