Seah Kian Peng wraps up Budget and Committee of Supply 2024 debates

05:45 Min

Wrapping up a “long but intense” debate on Budget and Committee of Supply 2024 on Thursday (Mar 7), Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng highlighted several firsts. It was the first time in the past six years that the number of cuts fell - 598 compared to 661 in 2023, partly due to fewer Members in the House. It was also the first time in three years where Members from both sides of the aisle explicitly expressed support for the Budget - from no less than the leaders of both opposition parties. On a personal basis, Mr Seah said it was his first Budget and Committee of Supply debate as Speaker, and hence the first time in 18 years that he did not have to make a Budget speech or file any cuts. Summing up, he said Budget 2024 will move Singapore “upwards and forward” - in a world where the country cannot aim to be “a mere safe space” but must take risks, accept failure and rise again.
