Shawn Huang on advancing mental health
Community-based health services receive more than 1,500 referrals per year but based on mathematical projections of over 5,000 per year, more help will be needed to deter a possible deficit of 3,500 per year. MP Shawn Huang raised this concern in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 7), saying child protective services caseloads will need more capacity. They are already prioritising the severe cases, but the required help must be provided to those in the moderate and mild risk levels to prevent further escalation. He highlighted the shortage of psychiatrists and psychologists and long waiting times for treatment and urged the Government to sharpen its emphasis and target resources for young people who are going through specific transitions to ensure that they have a more certain outcome. He said the journey may be long and challenging but he believes in the potential for growth in healing and positive change, in a world that often moves at an overwhelming pace where the struggles of the mind can be as debilitating as those of the body.
