Good Death Innovators
Good Death Innovators is a two-part documentary exploring how East Asia is redesigning the end of life. Driven by rapidly ageing populations, a surge in lonely deaths, and a severe shortage of burial space, societies across Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea are dismantling rigid ancestral traditions in favour of bold solutions.
Episode One investigates the booming “grief tech” market. As traditional columbariums overflow, pioneers use generative AI, virtual reality, and holograms to build interactive digital avatars of the deceased. Some services offer the bereaved a final chance to converse with lost loved ones, posing ethical questions about letting go.
Episode Two highlights physical and social innovations. From staging living funerals in mock coffins to custom-built ash-scattering drones and shared graves for strangers, the elderly are stripping away outdated rituals. They are reclaiming their final act, ensuring they depart entirely on their own terms.
