Sitoh Yih Pin on Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill

13:48 Min

In its calls to forgo the GST hike, the Workers’ Party (WP) wants to provide analgesia - lack of pain - to Singaporeans for an extended period of time, said MP Sitoh Yih Pin in Parliament on Monday (Nov 7). Mr Sitoh said it is neither possible nor advisable for the Government to shield Singaporeans from difficult economic conditions so that they feel no pain at all, and to spend more than its fair share in doing so. He argued against WP’s suggestion to use more of the Net Investment Returns Contribution for expenditure and took MP Jamus Lim to task for suggesting that the Government is “over-saving” for Singapore’s reserves. He said the PAP’s approach, of keeping Singapore alert to dangers and challenges while giving relief to those who are suffering more in tough times, will leave the country better off and more resilient.
