Sylvia Lim on Workplace Fairness Bill
In Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 8), MP Sylvia Lim expressed support for the Workplace Fairness Bill, highlighting two positive aspects - that it covers all stages of employment, as well as the range of responses when employers are assessed to have breached their obligations. However, she raised three questions related to the Bill, one of which was on the timing of implementation. Citing an example of unscrupulous employment practices by an employer, she wanted to know if the Ministry of Manpower is tracking situations of “potential bullying of older workers”, and what is being done about them. On the 11 protected characteristics listed in the Bill, Ms Lim also wanted to know what the restrictions are at the pre-employment stage on what employers can or cannot do.
