05:29 Min

Globally, most submarine cable disruptions result from accidental damage caused by fishing and anchoring activities. Industry data indicates there are about 100 to 200 such incidents worldwide each year. Singapore's international connectivity has remained resilient due to the diversity and volume of its connections to other countries. Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Tan Kiat How, who said this in reply to parliamentary questions on Thursday (Sep 10), pointed out that international cooperation is essential because submarine cables span multiple jurisdictions and issues can be transboundary. The Infocomm Media Development Authority has information sharing arrangements with partner governments and industry stakeholders to monitor submarine cable systems, said Mr Tan.
