Tan Wu Meng on advancing mental health
In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), MP Tan Wu Meng raised concerns about people being refused private insurance coverage or encountering stigma from insurers due to a mental health condition. He said this is an “area of market failure where regulators can step in”, pointing out that “while insurance in general is a business, the commercial health insurance market can and should serve a public good”. Dr Tan said that as long as this issue of the private insurance market is not addressed, all the Government’s efforts to improve access to mental health care, increase subsidies and make workplaces more inclusive and fair “risk ... not coming to their full potential or possibly even being undermined”.
