Tan Yia Swam on Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill
Further regulating and restricting the political space might deter genuine individuals from advocacy or sharing their views to help shape Singapore’s future. That was a point made by NMP Tan Yia Swam in Parliament on Monday (Oct 4). She said the Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill could also place barriers in the way of groups like non-governmental organisations that need to work with foreign entities. Dr Tan expressed concern about extensive powers being placed in the hands of the Home Affairs Minister. She suggested spreading this among different judicial branches and even allowing self-regulation by organisations.
