US-Iran standoff over Strait of Hormuz escalates as both sides exchange heavy attacks
The US and Iran have stepped up the pace and scope of attacks, putting an interim peace deal under even greater pressure. In the most-intense attacks in the region since a ceasefire was brokered in June, Iran launched strikes on American military facilities in Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Oman and Jordan, while the US struck Iranian missile, air defence and naval assets. Washington said it's only acting to protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has declared the waterway closed, insisting it retains authority over access.
