Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 5: Louis Chua on food and beverage accessibility in HDB towns and relooking EC model

07:01 Min

Affordable and accessible meal options should be available to all residents across Singapore, especially those without a food court or eating house within 400 metres of their homes, said MP Louis Chua. He urged HDB to consider a large-scale tender of sites across multiple towns for food and beverage vending machine operators, providing for economies of scale. In parliament on Wednesday (Mar 4), Mr Chua also called for a rethink of the executive condominium (EC) model, focusing on affordability and equitable access. He said EC prices have “skyrocketed” in the past 10 years and they can no longer fulfil their original intention, which was to give young couples an affordable alternative to private condominiums.
