Louis Chua on supporting Singaporeans in starting and raising families
Singapore needs to seriously reimagine its approach to addressing its low fertility rate as incremental efforts will never yield extraordinary results, said MP Louis Chua in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5). He reiterated a call for the Government to legislate the right to request flexible work arrangements, to make it easier for parents to care for their children while managing their work. Mr Chua noted that current measures revolve heavily around financial support, which prioritises the outsourcing of caregiving and incentivises parents – especially mothers – to return to work quickly. He said the system should instead champion parenthood, ensuring that parents can retain flexibility of work and dedicate more time to care for their children in their critical growing-up years.
