Hamid Razak on Singapore Sports Council (Amendment) Bill
Singapore’s expanded definition of sports to include mind sports and e-sports, as well as the inclusion of physical fitness activities within the functions of SportSG, reflect a broader and more inclusive understanding of sport - recognising its role not only in elite competition but also in public health, mental well-being and social cohesion, said MP Hamid Razak. He shared his own observations of how e-sports have brought people, especially youth, together in his constituency. At the same time, Dr Hamid said that as new sports grow in prominence, their development must complement rather than crowd out existing sporting pathways, particularly those that promote physical activity and broad-based participation. He spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Jan 13).
