Yip Hon Weng on Finance (Income Taxes) Bill
Singapore is using its tax system to accelerate AI adoption by letting businesses claim enhanced deductions on qualifying AI expenditures for two years. However, AI adoption is not the destination; productivity is, and its gains must be shared, said MP Yip Hon Weng. In parliament on Tuesday (Oct 6), he urged the government to learn deliberately from what it is about to subsidise. Design an evaluation now, he suggested, and after two years, publish what has been learnt about the forms of AI adoption most associated with real productivity gains and business transformation. Mr Yip added that the value is not merely knowing, but using the collective know-how to reduce the cost of discovery for future firms and influence where the next public dollar goes. This is how a temporary tax incentive can build permanent national capability, he said.
