Wan Rizal on Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill
A Bill to ban deepfakes during elections attempts to strike a delicate balance between safeguarding the democratic process and protecting freedom of expression and legitimate debate, said MP Wan Rizal in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15). He welcomed the increased responsibility placed on social media platforms by holding them accountable and imposing penalties of up to S$1 million for failing to act on corrective directions. Dr Wan Rizal sought clarity on what qualifies as “realistic enough” for a deepfake to deceive the public, asking if there will be consistent and fair enforcement guidelines. He also wanted to know how the Government intends to manage the volume of online content generated during election periods, as proactive monitoring and a swift response will be crucial.
