White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development: K Shanmugam on the impact on norms and values

22:28 Min

The White Paper on Singapore Women’s Development and the year-long nationwide conversations leading up to it have had an impact on the country’s collective psyche, internalising the idea of equality between the sexes and helping with norm-building. It is one of the most important outcomes so far, even though the recommendations in the Paper are still a guide post, not the end point, of the aspirations of Singapore women. That is the view of Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, which was expressed in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 5). He also spoke on the Government’s approach to tackling family violence against women. A task force on family violence had made a slew of recommendations last year to improve immediate support for survivors, enhance protection for them, prevent violence from recurring and raise awareness of early warning signs. Mr Shanmugam outlined how the authorities might respond to a possible scenario once the measures are implemented.
