Yeo Wan Ling on Online Safety (Relief and Accountability) Bill
Online platforms are not neutral bulletin boards, but amplifiers of information, emotion and sometimes, of harm, said MP Yeo Wan Ling in parliament on Wednesday (Nov 5). So, when harmful content is spread online, they have to be part of the solution. Ms Yeo said platforms must design systems that detect and throttle the spread of harmful content, provide real-time cooperation channels with Singapore’s new Online Safety Commission and be transparent about how quickly and often they act on takedown directions. She asked how their compliance with taking “reasonable measures” will be assessed.
