Yip Hon Weng on amendment bills for tougher laws to tackle money mules, Singpass abusers

08:33 Min

As Singapore moves towards a digital-ready future, it is imperative to tighten its legislations on the digital front, said MP Yip Hon Weng. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (May 9), he said the proposed amendments are timely and necessary. He also sought clarifications on the implementation of the two bills. He wanted to know how the Government will ascertain whether a suspect is adequately educated or can recognise a scam. He stressed the need to target the masterminds of scams and wanted to know what is being done to track and recover the money from such criminals. Mr Yip also wanted to know how the Government will balance the need for increased authentication with the goal of expanding the use of Singpass for transactions and services. He also raised concerns that seniors who are digitally less savvy may be exploited for money transfers or fall prey to scams. He wanted to know if the law will consider the circumstances and susceptibility of elderly victims.
