Yip Hon Weng on Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 3) Bill
In allowing Singapore’s President and Government ministers to accept international positions in a private capacity, will it be clear whom they represent when wearing these different hats? How will Singapore ensure that individuals in these roles align with national priorities? What measures will be in place to ensure there is no conflict of interest if, for example, a minister is transferred to another portfolio? Will the President or ministers keep their remuneration for such positions and who will pay for travel expenses related to these appointments? These were among the concerns raised by MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22). However, he said he did believe in the “net benefit” of such engagements. These include the potential to significantly enhance Singapore’s global standing, garner collaborations that ultimately benefit Singapore and allow its leaders to be effective advocates for Singapore’s interests on the global stage.
