Yip Hon Weng on Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill
The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill closes a critical gap by applying energy efficiency requirements to goods imported directly for individuals’ own use, said MP Yip Hon Weng. He raised four concerns - affordability for consumers, buyer protection in the digital marketplace, fair implementation during the transition and transparency in enforcement. Beyond regulation, Mr Yip said energy security is built not just on policy, but on collective behaviour and discipline. He asked if the government will lead the way, such as by setting air-conditioning temperature standards across its buildings and incentivising eco-driving certification for commercial fleets. “The cheapest energy is the energy that we do not use,” he told parliament on Wednesday (Apr 8).
