Yip Hon Weng on Singapore Sports Council (Amendment) Bill
Singapore’s sporting infrastructure may be struggling to keep pace with trends, said MP Yip Hon Weng in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 14). He gave examples of overbooked playing courts and noise disputes over pickleball. With SportSG set to manage facilities, he asked how it will address such issues. On SportSG being empowered to set codes of practice and accredit coaches and facilities, Mr Yip cautioned against “over-professionalising the sector” to a point where community-level coaching is priced out, and “homogenising sports” by inadvertently stifling organic activities such as parkour, street dance or informal seniors’ exercises. Mr Yip also spoke about legitimising e-sports, saying Singapore must at the same time legitimise the safety framework around it.
