With the early months of the new year behind us, the focus is now on maintaining and integrating healthier lifestyle habits for the rest of 2024. Whether it’s embarking on a fitness regime, cutting back on alcohol or resolving to eat better, the real test lies in sustaining these choices amid the demands of work, family and other commitments.

Catering to this need, Quaker introduces its 5-in-1 multigrain instant oats, designed for individuals leading bustling lifestyles in search of convenient and nutritious meal options.

RECIPES WITH POWERHOUSE INGREDIENTS

As the world’s No 1 oats brand* with a history of over 140 years, Quaker prides itself on helping people harness the advantages of this versatile grain. Oats is a rich source of antioxidants, dietary fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals.

Quaker’s 5-in-1 multigrain instant oats series is the latest addition to its range of oat-based products – with a traditional twist. It not only celebrates the health benefits of oats, but also integrates elements from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)^ to enhance well-being.

Said Mr Huang Chun Xiang, a TCM physician at Xing Chun TCM Clinic: “At the heart of TCM lies the concept of nourishing the body from within. TCM principles advocate a balanced flow of qi (vitality), blood and bodily fluids throughout the body. This balance is essential for maintaining optimal organ function and boosting vitality.”

Incorporating TCM ingredients into your diet can promote holistic health and address specific concerns, though individual needs may vary. “Everyone’s constitution and health conditions are different, so consult your healthcare provider or a qualified TCM practitioner for personalised health advice,” said Mr Huang.

FOUR VARIETIES FOR DIVERSE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

Quaker’s 5-in-1 multigrain instant oats come in four varieties, each featuring a blend of five main ingredients. Free from added sugars and preservatives, they contain protein (an essential nutrient for the building and maintenance of body tissue); iron, which is crucial in the formation of red blood cells; and magnesium to promote calcium absorption and retention as well as normal nerve and muscle functions.

The Five Black version incorporates black sesame, black beans, rye, triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye) and black rice, which is regarded as “medicinal rice” in TCM. Mr Huang explained: “Ancient medical texts state that black rice benefits the body by tonifying the kidneys, promoting blood circulation, clearing the liver and invigorating the body. It is especially effective in managing conditions such as dizziness, anaemia, lower back pain, night blindness and tinnitus.”

TCM emphasises nourishing the body from within through the use of ingredients with properties that balance the flow of qi (energy), blood and bodily fluids.

If you favour coconut, go for the Five White option that incorporates coconut powder, yam, poria (fu ling) rice flakes, coix seeds (a wholegrain cereal) and white kidney beans. Said Mr Huang: “TCM values coix seeds for their heat-clearing and diuretic properties, as well as their ability to reduce swelling and dispel dampness. Fu ling is prized for its diuretic prowess, its harmonising effects on the spleen and stomach, and its ability to eliminate dampness. It is often included in medicinal diets or herbal teas to address issues associated with a weakened spleen and stomach, as well as fatigue and low energy levels.”

The green Chia Multi-grain version boasts a hearty combination of oats, rye and triticale, alongside fibre-laden chia seeds and magnesium-rich barley. “Barley is effective in promoting blood circulation and is known to treat conditions such as duodenal ulcers and gastritis, ease indigestion and alleviate bloating,” shared Mr Huang.

Lastly, the Five Red mix offers a concoction of red beans, red dates, goji berries, dried longan and red rice – nourishing ingredients commonly found in traditional Chinese soups, desserts, herbal teas and tonics. Red beans, red dates and goji berries contain dietary fibre, which aids in digestive health, while longan benefits the heart and spleen, enriches qi and blood, and calms the mind. “Longan is recommended for conditions associated with heart and spleen deficiency that can manifest as insomnia, forgetfulness, palpitations and dizziness,” added Mr Huang.

IDEAL FOR THE HEALTH-CONSCIOUS AND TIME-PRESSED

A boon for those juggling a busy schedule, instant oats is easy to prepare, and serves as a convenient breakfast, snack or meal replacement.

Simply pour out a serving (about two tablespoonfuls), add 200ml of hot water, stir well and let it sit for three minutes before enjoying its rich taste. Containing protein and low in sugar, it also makes an excellent pre- or post-workout bite as well as a handy office pantry snack for those moments of mid-day hunger.

Making better food choices doesn’t require spending hours in the kitchen. With Quaker’s 5-in-1 multigrain instant oats, you can effortlessly make your “eat well” resolutions stick.
