CNA938 Rewind - A Letter to Myself: Hartley Muze, Singapore's first elite naval diver of African descent, shares his multicultural journey
Hartley Muze is Singaporean through and through — but he does sometimes get asked questions most of his fellow citizens don't. Hartley's parents came from Tanzania in 1990 and eventually became citizens here. Hartley himself was born in Singapore and has been through every rite of passage a Singaporean male would. He was in fact the first Singaporean of African descent to make the cut for the elite Naval Diving Unit during his national service. Hartley shares how his journey has helped him learn the value of cultural adaptability, patience, a sense of humour, and affirms Singapore's multicultural social fabric.
