Corruption scandals and changing lifestyles see Muslims in Malaysia turning to Islamic party PAS and influential religious leaders for guidance, while the recent presidential election in Indonesia suggests political Islam is waning there. 

Arnold Gay speaks to CNA's Nivell Rayda and Amir Yusof to find out what's shaping these religious trends. 

Amir Yusof on why political Islam is gaining popularity in Malaysia:
Muslim youth are gravitating more towards religious content (on social media) ... and support for UMNO has lessened over the years due to corruption scandals involving its leaders ... So Malay Muslims in Malaysia look to the next best alternative party.

Nivell Rayda on why things are different in Indonesia:
There has been a lot of pushback by the authorities against some of the more radical hardline Islamic groups ... The ban can be considered a bit of a win for religious harmony ... although the timing of the ban can be considered quite political.
