CNA Correspondent Podcast: With Joe Biden out, could Kamala Harris beat Donald Trump?

Mining the deep reporting of CNA's correspondents, Teresa Tang goes behind the scenes with journalists on the frontlines to unpack the biggest Asian and global stories.

It could be the most tumultuous lead-up to a US presidential election ever. The Democratic incumbent Joe Biden has dropped out of the race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.

Teresa Tang speaks with Nick Harper to ask all the burning questions, including who could be Ms Harris’ running mate and can she take on Republican nominee Donald Trump.

President Joe Biden raises the hand of Vice President Kamala Harris after viewing the Independence Day fireworks display over the National Mall from the balcony of the White House, Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Washington. She's already broken barriers, and now Harris could soon become the first Black woman to head a major party's presidential ticket after President Joe Biden's ended his reelection bid. Here's an excerpt from the podcast:

Teresa Tang:

The president's decision to leave the race, endorse his VP Kamala Harris, isn't entirely surprising, right? But it is still another eyebrow raising moment in this campaign.

What do you make of how Mr Biden told the world that he's quitting? He issued a statement on social media on a Sunday. And to me, that speaks to the urgency of this announcement.

Nick Harper:

I mean it was unbelievable, that statement coming out of the blue in the middle of a Sunday afternoon, just dropped onto social media with no fanfare, with no big speech, with no big announcement.

It blindsided even his closest staff that he was with at his residence here in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He only told them, apparently, one minute before he unleashed that statement onto the world, which I think was a surprise to them.

But you're right, I think it also speaks to the urgency of the matter, the fact that he has taken about three and a half weeks since that disastrous debate that started all of this, considering his next move, he was holed up here, at his private residence, considering what to do.

And we're told that he made the decision on Saturday afternoon, he spoke to two close advisers, they worked for 24 hours to come up with that statement and then they dropped that bombshell on Sunday afternoon.
