15 people under police probe for allegedly breaking Covid-19 laws by gathering at Serangoon Gardens pub
The police received a report on June 23, 2020 at 2.25am stating that a group of people were entering and exiting a pub along Serangoon Garden Way.
SINGAPORE — The police are investigating 15 people aged between 21 and 30 for allegedly breaking safe-distancing regulations by gathering at a pub in Serangoon Gardens in June last year.
On Monday (Sept 6), 13 of them will be charged with breaking laws to control the spread of Covid-19.
Investigations into the remaining two individuals, aged 26 and 30, are underway.
The police said on Monday that they received a report on June 23 last year at 2.25am stating that a group of people were entering and leaving the pub located along Serangoon Garden Way.
At that time, Singapore was in the second phase of its reopening after a partial lockdown to contain the coronavirus, with gatherings allowed only in groups of up to five people.
Police officers dispatched to the pub found 15 people who were believed to have gathered there.
Investigations showed that the pub had not been operating at the time and was allegedly being used to house the private gathering for the 15 people.
Under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020, an individual cannot gather in a group of more than five people outside his or her home, unless it is for work.
If found guilty under Section 34(7)(a) of the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act 2020, those charged can each be fined up to S$10,000 or jailed for up to six months, or receive both penalties.
The police advised the public to take safe-distancing precautions seriously.
