3 arrested and charged for assaulting police officer in nightclub

SINGAPORE — Two men and a woman were arrested for hurting a police officer during a brawl at Envy Dance Club located along Sentosa Gateway on Sunday morning (Nov 12).
TODAY understands that the three suspects, all aged 23, were club-goers.
Videos of the incident, which happened around 4.30am, subsequently went viral on social media, with one garnering close to a thousand shares by Tuesday (Nov 14). In that video, bouncers of the club dressed in black and club-goers were seen throwing punches at one another, while some were throwing carafes and glasses at others.
In a news release on Sunday morning, the police said that an officer was punched during that incident.
“An officer from Clementi Police Division, who was performing a routine patrol at a public entertainment outlet along Sentosa Gateway, tried to stop a dispute but was assaulted by two 23-year-old men. A 23-year-old woman also grabbed the officer and punched him,” said the police.
The three were charged in court on Monday (Nov 13) for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty.
If found guilty, they could be jailed for up to seven years, a fine or/and caning.
When contacted by TODAY, Envy Dance Club said it will comment only after discussion with the police.
In a post on its Facebook page on Tuesday, the club apologised for the “dismays caused during the enforcement for safety and protection” and stated that it does not “condone rowdy actions”.
“We are conducting investigations with the help of the Singapore Police Force,” the club wrote. “Envy Dance Club strictly does not condone such rowdy actions and will protect public interests at all costs.”
In an update, it said its “injured floor staff and security officers are back in good shape recovering well”, and its lawyers will be “reviewing and taking the necessary actions”.
The club also called out to the public to appeal for more information as to what happened that night.
“Anyone with more information that can help do pm us. Your identity will be kept strictly confidential,” it wrote.
The police reiterated in a release on Sunday morning that they take a serious view against people who cause physical and verbal harm to their officers.
This follows four such cases over the weekend, where five men and a woman — aged between 18 and 36 — had used abusive language and assaulted police officers.
